Frequently Asked Questions

Q. What is a Newbie?

A. Newbies are commuters who have not regularly used sustainable transportation to get to work in the past year. It does not mean that you are new to the Challenge or that you are new to DriveLessSaveMore. The purpose of the Newbie drawing category is to identify commuters whose behavior has changed as a result of taking the Challenge. We love all our Challenge takers, and we like congratulating people who made the switch his year. We hope the habits continue!

Q. Does everyone in a car- or vanpool need to keep their own Trip Diary?

A. Only if they want to win prizes! Think of pooling as taking a small MAX train. Everyone on the train keeps their own diary even if they make exactly the same trip.

Q. As a TC, I can see in DriveLessSaveMore (DLSM) that there are people registered with my company that no longer work here or have changed their names or have duplicate accounts. How do I fix that?

A. We would LOVE to help you clean up your list! Just send us your changes ( This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it ; or This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it ) and we'll take care of it. Unfortunately, TCs aren't allowed to do it themselves.

Q. On DriveLessSaveMore, can my trips apply to more than one trip reduction program?

A. YES! If a person is registered for one trip reduction program, i.e. SmartTrips, and they want their trips to count for another one as well, they need to edit their profile and check the new trip reduction program their want to participant in.

Once you’re on your “My Drive Less Trip Diary” personal page, click “Edit Your Personal Data”. This page looks like the registration page you originally filled out.

In the blue box that says “I would like to participate in the following trip reduction programs:” check the new program you want to participant in. You can check as many programs as you want. Then hit the submit button at the bottom of the page to save the data.

Q. I used to be on your mailing list for the Carefree Commuter Challenge, but I'm not getting them anymore. Why is that and can you sign me back up?

A. It could be a problem with our email program. If you forwarded the Challenge Update to a colleague who then "opted out" using the link in that email, it's your email address that was affected, not theirs. Our provider recently added a confirmation window to address this. To get back on our mailing list, you have to actively sign up again. See "Sign up for our Email Newsletter" on our home page.

A. If you actively opted out, your status is "do not mail" and you would need to sign up again, as above.

Q. I have moved and need to change the roundtrip mileage on my DLSM trip diary.

A. Call or email us and we'll take care of it.

Q. Do Scooters, Motorcycles, electric cars and/or segways count in the CCC?

A. Not at this time. Although a case can be made for the efficiency of these modes of transportation, our organization and others such as Metro, DEQ, Oregon Department of Energy and cities and counties have the mission to promote transit, walking, biking, carpooling, vanpooling, telecommuting and compressed work week. We haven’t included promoting single-occupancy, fossil-fuel burning vehicles of any type. (I didn’t mean that to sound flippant.) If you have a passenger on the motorcycle or scooter, that’s a “car” pool! We haven’t included electric cars either. In Oregon, more than 40% of all electricity is generated by burning coal; nationally, it's more than 50%.

For more about motorcycles specifically, check out this article.

Q. Why is my employer name listed more than once in DSLM?

A. This is a backend problem that we are working with DLSM to fix. But don't let that stop you from registering! Just pick one and we'll sort it out later. We are contacting TCs to verify whether there are in fact multiple branches or whether we can merge all duplicates into one list. We will keep affected companies in the loop.

Q. I already have a DLSM trip diary, do I need to register again?

A. Nope. (but if you are a TC, we will still need you to fill out a Company / TC Registration.)
